30% of ocean within Fiji’s EEZ will be protected by 2030 - Bainimarama

Thirty percent of Fiji’s ocean within the exclusive economic zone will be protected by 2030, and eight percent of this is the Lau Group.

This was highlighted by the Prime Minister and Minister for iTaukei Affairs and Fisheries Voreqe Bainimarama while launching the Marine Protected Area National Consultation. He says the Fijian people are the stewards of the Blue Pacific, the world's largest ocean, the largest marine ecosystem, and the carbon sect.

Bainimarama says the mission is to protect the ocean and the life it sustains for future generations.

He adds they had officially launched 17 voluntary commitments toward the protection and sustainable management of oceans at the UN Oceans Conference, which Fiji co-hosted with Sweden in June of 2017.

The Prime Minister says they will deepen ocean literacy through the national school curriculum and will slash carbon emissions for the domestic shipping sector by 40 percent.
