$270.2M collected through ECAL since it began in the 2017/2018 financial year

$270.2 million has been collected through the Environmental and Climate Adaptation Levy, since it began in the 2017/2018 financial year.

$255.9 million has been used to finance 102 projects to date, programmed in the National Budget to address climate change and environment conservation.

As at 30th April this year, 56 projects have been funded under the Environmental and Climate Adaptation Levy.

$119.7 million has been collected through ECAL as of 30th April,2019 while $105.5 million has been used to finance the 56 projects this year.

$68.67 million dollars has been used in infrastructure development, $19.99 million has been used for water management, $3.63 has been used for agricultural development, $3.51 million has been used in energy conservation, $3.61 was allocated for sustainable resource management, $2.15 was utilized in disaster relief and response, $1.30 million was for urban development, $1.05 was for environmental conservation, $0.96 million was for rural development and $0.63 was for meteorology services.

It was announced in the 2019/2020 national budget ECAL or the Environmental and Climate Adaptation Levy on goods including vehicles.

To curb the issues of traffic congestion, 10% ECAL will be imposed on all new and used hybrid vehicles and all new and used non hybrid vehicles.

The 10% ECAL will also be levied on the import of smart phones, air conditioners, freezers/refrigerators, television, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, electric stoves, microwaves and electric lawn mowers.
