Minister for Education, Rosy Akbar

Minister for Education, Rosy Akbar is today encouraging the Year 12 and 13 students who resumed school today to tackle challenges coming their way, and set their sights on the National Examinations in December.

While welcoming back the students to school after three months of school closure, Akbar says around 21,700 students across the nation were expected to return to school today.

Akbar says she knows that the students' first reaction will be to catch up with their friends whom they will be meeting after a hundred days but she stresses that the students should not forget the new 'normal'

She is encouraging all students to abide by the rules that have been set.

The Education Minister also stresses to the senior students that the juniors look up to them and emulate their behaviour.

Akbar says the teachers are also counting on the senior students to set a good example for the juniors as they COVID-proof the schools, and to set the right atmosphere for learning and teaching under the current circumstances.

Akbar says children in places that were hit worst by Tropical Cyclone Harold, such as Kadavu and Southern Lau have to equip themselves for a greater battle, compared to those whose schools were not damaged by the cyclone.

She says as the Ministry makes the best possible effort to hasten repair and maintenance works in the worst affected areas, students are urged to adjust to their makeshift facilities and prioritise learning under all circumstances.

Akbar says these are not ideal circumstances but she believes in the students and their ability to be strong and adapt.

Parents are also urged to ensure that their children follow the rules and guidelines set by schools in terms of COVID-proofing and to actively participate in their education as they resume normal schooling.

The Minister also assures parents that adequate psycho-social support will be provided to the students upon their return to school.

Students are also encouraged to approach their School Heads and teachers for any issues faced so that a concerted effort can be made towards a smooth transition into term two.
