207 new junior nurses have been posted to the CWM, Lautoka and Labasa hospitals.

They are now part of the health system and will be appointed as staff nurses after completing their internship.

The Health Ministry says the nurse internship is a mandatory process to allow the fresh graduates to adjust to the nursing career and begin the journey to a noble profession and also serving the Fijian people.

The Ministry has been recruiting nurses annually with new graduates as they complete their studies from the School of Nursing at Fiji National University and the Sangam School of Nursing to boost the health service delivery and maintain the staff and patient ratio.

Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, Kavekini Neidiri says the need for recruiting more nurses has always been there as they look forward to updating their workforce and maintain the nurse to patient ratio.

He says the Ministry recruits more nurses every year to replace the retiring nurses and fill in vacancies created by nurses who have resigned from the service for greener pastures.

Neidiri says the COVID-19 global pandemic has created a demand for more frontline health workers and this can only be addressed by adding more nurses to the existing workforce.

He says the Ministry will continue to train and certify nurses to deliver the service where they will operate from divisional and sub-divisional hospitals, health centres and nursing stations.
