2 Fijians are in police custody for allegedly attempting to import illegal drugs into the country.

The arrest came as a result of a successful joint collaboration between the Fiji Police Force, Fiji Revenue Customs Service, Post Fiji Limited and international law enforcement partners.

Police Commissioner Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho says while the global attention remained on the pandemic, collaboration on tackling transnational crimes continued in earnest.

Qiliho says collaboration through the sharing of information between multi-agencies has been key to the success of this operation.

He further says it is also testament to the commitment their foreign partners have in supporting Fiji's efforts in keeping Fiji and the Pacific region free of transnational organized crimes.

Qiliho highlighted that tackling transnational crimes remained a high priority adding that they are going to be relentless in their pursuit of disrupting these organised crime groups.

Qiliho says the demand on law enforcement has grown due to the pandemic, however with the unwavering support of their international partners, they remain steadfast in their commitment towards tackling transnational crimes for the sake of the Fijian people and our fellow Pacific neighbours.

The Acting CEO of FRCS, Jonetani Vuto says coordinated border management and partnership between Customs and other government agencies has been an enabler to provide greater synergies in border security.

More information will be released upon the completion of the investigation.
