Fifteen recycling advocates of Koronivia, Nausori took part in a planning/training session for the Pilot Recycling Project for Kabutri Drive, which will be implemented later this month.

The session was organised by Pacific Recycling Foundation at their head office in Koronivia.

Pacific Recycling Foundation and Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited say these 15 community members, from all walks of life, of Kabutri Drive, which includes seven women and eight men will co-lead the project by creating awareness on waste management and recycling.

PRF Founder and WRFL Director/CEO, Mr. Amitesh Deo said discussions ranged from project input and output, impact, outcomes, roles and responsibilities.

“We also selected three groups who will advocate on the best practices of recycling, and also try to increase community participation,” said Mr. Deo.

Mr. Deo said once implemented, the project will run for three months.

PRF will install a special designed ‘I Recycle’ bin in the community. The project is an initiative of PRF and supported by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, Department of Environment, Nausori Town Council and RC Manubhai & Co Pte Limited.

A recycling advocate of Kabutri Drive, Ms. Deborah Moira said the discussion and training has provided them the ability to reduce waste by recycling which will create a healthy environment and also bring the community together.

“We feel very proud and fortunate to be part of this project, as we are the pioneers of the first community recycling project ever in Fiji. We promise to give our full commitment to ensure the message of recycling is taken to other communities as well,” said Ms. Moira.

Another recycling advocate of Kabutri Drive, Ms. Keshni Kiran said she wants to thank PRF, WRFL and their partners for having confidence in them to uplift the standard of their community.

“Recyclables never meant much to me before, as it was something to get rid-off without realising its impact on the environment. Through the session, I have learnt that the most sustainable way to manage waste is by recycling,” said Ms. Kiran.

“I value the insights and guidance provided in the training session and appreciate the confidence that has been bestowed on us to carry the message to all other residents of Kabutri Drive,” stated Ms. Kiran.
