The National Anti-Litter Campaign has been launched to control the littering in Fiji so that people start caring for the environment.

Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, Sivendra Michael says people of any age should be fined if they are found littering.

Michael says the fines collected will be put in a trust fund that will fund beach clean up and other clean up.

He says the 'Right Thing Campaign' will look at the behaviour and mindset shift so that people take cleanliness seriously.

When fijivillage News asked how else will the Ministry ensure that littering in the future is unthinkable, Michael says they will use community role models to try and promote beautification projects.

The Permanent Secretary says they will also bring back the Clean School Programme through the Ministry of Education, where educational materials will be given to kindergarten, Class 1 and Class 2 because this is the age group that should know about environmental stewardship.

He says they will also show footage of how many cubic metrics of rubbish end up in our landfills and will create an awareness of the facts themselves.

Michael says about 1,000 litter prevention officers will be trained across all divisions including outer islands.

He says any act of bribery is the dismissal of them as litter prevention officers as there are code of ethics which they have signed.

Michael further says the month of March is the International Day for Zero Waste and Global Recycling Day, where every weekend civil servants, along with businesses and business houses will be committed to a clean-up campaign.
