There needs to be a targeted and focused approach to creating digital education as according to the 2023 “Assessing Digital and Financial Literacy In Fiji” report by UN Capital Development Fund, Fiji scored 26.45 points out of 52 points under the Digital and Financial Literacy Index - substantiating the need for comprehensive digital programmes in Fiji.

This has been highlighted by Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Communications, Manoa Kamikamica while speaking during the Women in Tech Awards where he says despite most Fijians having access to smartphones (81 percent) and internet (80 percent use the internet), almost half (47 percent) of Fijians worry technology is leaving them behind.

He says interestingly, the report showed that the Digital and Financial Literacy Index scores for both genders were more or less similar for both urban and rural segments.

Kamikamica says its events such as Women in Tech that helps bridge the divide, opens doors for women to actively participate and contribute to the digitalisation of the nation.

He says it encourages their involvement in navigating digital spaces, building their capacity and enhancing their competencies in technology-driven environments, thereby fostering an environment of inclusivity and empowerment for women in the tech industry.

The Acting Prime Minister says for a Small Island Developing State like Fiji, the digital economy is not merely a choice but a necessity as it presents boundless opportunities for growth, job creation, and global competitiveness.

He says embracing digital trade and technologies does not just mean staying relevant, it means charting a course toward sustainable development, economic diversification and social inclusion.

Kamikamica further says through the Girls in ICT Programme, they have empowered and harnessed the IT skills of 55 girls between the ages of 15 and 18, with the aim to increasing competencies and participation in the sector.

He adds these programmes demonstrates their commitment and deep understanding of the transformative shift that they are weaving into the society, particularly for women.
