The Rewa Provincial Council has shown great commitment to the education of the children in the province by sponsoring more than 50 students in trade courses.

Roko Tui Rewa Kitione Raibevu says the Provincial Council decided this year to also offer their education assistance to students who want to take up trade courses as they were only offering assistance to students studying Bachelor’s.

He says what they saw during the COVID-19 pandemic was that all those people who had higher qualifications were at home, and those who had trade qualifications continued to be employed.

Raibevu says they offered assistance to 28 students studying for a Bachelor's at USP, 38 students studying at FNU, where 21 students doing Bachelor's and 17 students doing Trade courses, 15 students studying at Nadave and 20 students at Navuso.

He adds these students are assisted by the funds raised during the Rewa Day celebrations.

The Roko Tui Rewa also highlighted the need for specific training on growing tomatoes for the people of Beqa because this product grows well on the island during off-seasons.

He says the type of farming practices being followed now on the island is what has been passed down from generations.

Raibevu says they need a specific person to be on the island to train farmers on the best farming practices so they are up-skilled.

He also highlighted that this could be achieved if a vocational training centre was set up at the Beqa Yanuca Secondary School.
