SODELPA MP, Niko Nawaikula says they have had enough and there are two ways of removing the government while Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has questioned why the Opposition is silent on the issue of military intervention.

Nawaikula made this comment while speaking on the High Court Amendment Bill where he stated the intention of the bill is to intimidate those who oppose and criticise the government.

With the passing of the High Court Amendment Bill, a specialised Anti-Corruption Division of the High Court and Magistrates Court will now be established which will be presided over by Judges and Magistrates who will deal specifically with cases relating to anti-corruption law.

Nawaikula says all corruption related cases including his will now be channeled to the new court.

Sayed-Khaiyum questioned why the members of the opposition did not say anything when Nawaikula was talking about military intervention.

Minister for Commerce, Trade and Tourism, Faiyaz Koya has labelled Nawaikula’s comments as garbage and says Nawaikula has been anti-democratic and was part of the threat and intimidation to a particular portion of a population.

Koya says they are not creating a court of their own that they can intimidate a judge to do something as the government will not do such things.

Another SODELPA MP, Tanya Waqanika the told government if they are going to have a specialised court make sure that whoever you appoint stick solely to that because right now with specialised court judicial officers are overworked and judicial officers are rotating in courts.

She says we have existing issues and now we will have another specialised court.

NFP Leader, Professor Biman Prasad says when they came in parliament on Monday, they had no idea that the Attorney General was planning to bring the bills.

He says suddenly in the middle of the day, they got to hear about the important bills.

Prasad has questioned why the government is not giving the people an opportunity to have their say on the bills.

The NFP leader adds he cannot understand why Sayed-Khaiyum is accusing the Law Society of conspiring with the opposition.

Sayed-Khaiyum says the parliamentary business committee was told about the bills.

He stresses the judiciary is independent and there is no interference.
