Great Council of Chiefs Chairman Ratu Viliame Seruvakula

To ensure there is more family time, the village of Nasautoka in Wainibuka has banned the consumption of grog from 11pm Saturday until Sunday is over, and they have also banned the consumption of grog for the first week of every month.

While speaking on fijivillage Straight Talk with Vijay Narayan, Great Council of Chiefs Chairman Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, who is also the chief of Nasautoka Village, says he noticed during Sundays, the men get together to drink grog, and do not enjoy meals with the family.

He says what he noticed is that parents spend less time with their families.

Ratu Viliame says he raised this during their village meeting and told the elders that they need to improve on this as family time is an important part of a child’s development.

He adds that it was hard for the villagers to follow such protocols in the first few weeks, but as time went by, it became a norm for the villagers.

Ratu Viliame says some villages are following the same rules and hopes it can be adopted in every community.
