As Muslims celebrate Eid today, the community is being urged to embrace the spirit of unity, generosity and gratitude during this festive occasion.

While speaking to fijivillage News, Fiji Muslim League’s Board of Islamic Affairs Chairperson Shaizad Ali says Eid is a time for reflection, togetherness, and extending kindness to those in need.

He has reminded community of the significance of Zakat al-Fitr, the mandatory charity given before Eid prayers, which is set at $8 per person this year in Fiji.

Ali is encouraging families to distribute this directly to those in need rather than relying solely on donation boxes at mosques, ensuring that struggling families can purchase essential Eid items such as food and new clothes for children.

Ali also reflected on the rich history of Eid and the teachings of Islam, noting that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) always prioritised caring for the poor and fostering harmony among people.

He is calling on Fijians to use the occasion to strengthen bonds with family, friends, and neighbours, regardless of faith, and to seek forgiveness and reconciliation.

Ali says in Islam, Eid is not just about personal joy but about sharing happiness with others, especially the less fortunate and as we celebrate, let us remember to include everyone in our joy and ensure no one is left behind.

He also encouraged the community to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet by taking different routes to and from Eid prayers, greeting as many people as possible, and spreading goodwill.

Ali has invited people of all backgrounds to join in the celebrations.

He says they welcome everyone to their homes and gatherings and no matter where you are or what faith you follow, you are our brothers and sisters, and we celebrate together.

Eid marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, prayer, and self-reflection in Islam.

According to Islamic belief, Allah revealed the command to fast during Ramadan which became one of the Five Pillars of Islam, and Muslims were instructed to observe it from dawn to sunset as an act of devotion and self-discipline.
