With the new school year starting on the 29th of this month, drivers are urged to prioritise road safety and adhere to speed limits and other crucial measures to ensure the safety of children on our roads.

The Land Transport Authority says with schools to reopen on January 29th, increased traffic activities are expected as parents, students, and school staff commute to and from educational institutions.

LTA Acting Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa says ensuring the safety of our children is a collective responsibility, and it is crucial for drivers to be mindful of their speed and adhere to road safety measures.

He says they want to create an environment where children can travel to and from school without any unnecessary risks.

Rokosawa says drivers are urged to avoid speeding in school zones and to be particularly vigilant near school patrol signs.

He adds the authority is also emphasizing the importance of adhering to traffic signs, including those indicating reduced speed limits and school crossings.

Rokosawa is also reminding drivers to watch out for children and pedestrians who may be crossing the road, especially from behind parked vehicles.

He says at intersections and roundabouts, drivers should exercise caution and be aware of their surroundings.

The Acting CEO says with the influx of students and parents during school drop-off and pick-up times, increased vigilance is necessary to prevent accidents and ensure the smooth flow of traffic.

He says LTA will be actively enforcing traffic laws, and they will not hesitate to apply penalties to those who flout the rules.

He adds the safety of our roads is paramount, especially when it comes to protecting our young pedestrians.

Rokosawa is also urging pedestrians, especially students, to follow road safety guidelines, including using designated crosswalks, waiting for traffic lights, and being cautious when crossing roads.

He says by promoting responsible behaviour among both drivers and pedestrians, the Authority aims to create a safer and more secure environment for everyone on the road.

The Acting CEO says LTA will continue its community outreach and school awareness campaigns on road safety leading up to the reopening of the new school term.

Rokosawa adds these campaigns would include educational materials, community outreach programs, and social media initiatives to engage and inform the public about the critical role they play in ensuring road safety.

He is encouraging parents, educators, and community leaders to join the effort by educating children about safe road practices and reinforcing the importance of being cautious when crossing roads.
