The Fiji Government has introduced the country’s first-ever National Early Childhood Development Policy which focuses on improving the health, safety, and education of young children, especially during their first 1,000 days of life.

Minister for Health and Medical Services Doctor Atonio Lalabalavu revealed this during the 53rd PIF Leaders Meeting held in Nuku'alofa, Tonga and says the creation of this policy involved strong government support and consultations with experts and communities and an advisory committee made up of various ministries and organizations, which helped shape the policy to meet the needs of children from birth to 8 years old.

He says the policy is about more than just individual care, it’s about building a strong future for the country by focusing on proper nutrition, immunisation and mental health support for both children and parents.

Dr. Lalabalavu says it also aims to help children reach their full potential and improve their long-term health and development.

He adds that local efforts will play a key role in making these programs successful, helping to create a healthier and more prosperous generation.

The Minister says this policy will not only protect children but also ensure a brighter future for Fiji and the Pacific.

The policy-making is a joint effort by the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection to ensure that all children grow up in a safe and caring environment.
