PM says Code of Conduct Bill is timely

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says the Coalition Government is still committed to the promises they made as they were accused of not doing what they had promised they would do in the first two years of their term.

While responding to the President's speech while opening the Parliament, Rabuka says they have a term of four years and they cannot do everything in the first year.

When questioned on the President's remarks on the Code of Conduct Bill for public office holders, Rabuka says it is timely and it is something that was going to come out anyway, because it's in the Constitution and the Parliamentary Standing Orders.

Rabuka says they have the standard, unwritten rules but stated in the Oath of Office, when Ministers are sworn into office about holding themselves and the office in the highest regard all the time, not allowing it to be brought to disrepute by individual actions.

The Prime Minister further says that since the President has spoken about inflammatory comments on social media by Ministers, it is something that will have to be legislated and the freedom is to be enjoyed with responsibility.

He says they are concerned about the conduct of some MPs on social media and will continue to be.
