Checkpoints around the country will remain and Police will continue to carry out this exercise throughout the festive season.

Assistant Commissioner for Police Operations, Livai Driu says the Fiji Police Force are mandated for the safety and security on our roads and it will continue with checkpoint operations.

ACP Driu says Police have increased their operation tempo from last month in order to create a safe environment during this festive season.

He says checkpoints are there as a sign of warning to everyone who has bad intentions and it also serves as an awareness to drivers reminding them to prioritise their safety and of their passengers.

The Assistant Commissioner says through checkpoints, Police officers are able to seize drugs, charge people without proper documentation, carrying excessive passengers and more.

He says they have also managed to stop people who were caught driving while under the influence of excessive liquor.

ACP Driu says they are calling on members of the public to be patient with them as they do their checks on the road.

He adds that the checkpoints are there for the safety of all road-users.
