Seven people were arrested for drinking and driving while 140 traffic infringement notices were issued for speeding by Police from 6am yesterday to 6 this morning.

Chief Operations Officer Assistant Commissioner of Police Livai Driu says four arrests were made in the Central Division and three in the Western Division in the Namaka area.

He says it is sad to note that despite warnings and advisories, they continue to record arrests and bookings for drunk and driving and speeding, two of the leading causes of accidents and fatalities.

With the national road death toll standing at 30 compared to 9 for the same period last year, the ACP Driu says drivers must adopt a change of mindset and attitude.

He says it all comes down to the drivers' attitude.

He adds that every decision has consequences, so if one chooses to drive recklessly by speeding or driving after having a few alcoholic drinks, then accidents are going to happen.

The Chief Operation Officer says if people care about getting home to their families, they should be responsible and take ownership of their safety when driving.

ACP Driu says Police will do their part in issuing advisories, but drivers and pedestrians will need to do their part by being responsible and taking ownership of their safety whilst on the road.
