15 women from Omkar settlement in Narere will learn the basics of running their own local business within their groups.

15 women from Omkar settlement in Narere are attending a one-week workshop conducted by the Social Empowerment and Education Programme or SEEP where they will learn the basics of running their own local business within their groups.

After the completion of the workshop, the non-government organisation will ensure that their business licenses are set-up and they will also provide the basic food items such as milk, sugar, flour and other goods to help these women start their businesses.

The organisation says this is the culmination of the post-COVID-19 survey conducted by them in May this year within the 8 informal settlements. The workshops will also be held in other informal settlements in Beaumont, Waidamudamu, Dilkusha, Veiraisi in Nadera, Maravu in Nabua and Howell Road.

They say a follow up was done in July and August by their team to identify those families whose livelihood had been affected by the pandemic.

From their visit, SEEP says it was evident that family members within these areas had lost their jobs or are still working under reduced hours, and had lost 50% - 100% income per household.
